Horace Mann Horace Mann wrote reports in 1846 and 1848 that showed the nation his idea of a new type of school (Fraser, 44). He urged the country to get behind the idea of public support in common school education (Fraser, 44). Mann believed that this was the only way for democracy to thrive in the country (Fraser,44). The way he proposed to do this was to tax the public for their resources to create a public education (Fraser, 44). He did not think that churches should have control over schools, and that all schools should have universal religious values (Fraser, 44). Horace Mann’s ideas worked because this is now school systems work today. The public is taxed and that money goes into educating the children. I think this is great, because all families, rich or poor, can send their children to school. If a democracy is to thrive, the citizens need to be educated. Some churches continued to educate students, so the churches got what they wanted too. We ended up with a way to educate everyone and make the majority of the public happy. | Catherine E. Beecher Catherine E. Beecher advocated for women to have the opportunity to be allowed to teach (Fraser, 50). She shared her views and changed the way of thinking of many people. She changed women’s minds and showed them that they were ideal for the position (Fraser, 50). Beecher created new opportunities for women that were not available before (Fraser, 50). She successfully changed the profession to being mostly women teachers, instead of mostly men (Fraser, 51). She convinced everyone that women were great for the job because of their maternal instincts and their willingness to work at lower wages than men (Fraser, 51). Finally, women could work outside of their homes (Fraser, 51). Catherine E. Beecher opened the doors for millions of women. Women are still teachers today, and it was all because she paved the way. She opened the doors for many other women I will be discussing on this blog page. Today, we have a majority of women teachers, and many people in this class are hoping to be teachers one day. Everyone should thank Beecher for her bravery in paving the way for all of us. Grace C. Strachan Grace C. Strachan helped to change schooling because she lead to create equal salaries between men and women teachers (Fraser, 216). She fought on a basis that women should not be stuck on the lower rungs in schooling (Fraser, 216). She also made a point to say that it is unfair that there is an unequal pay scale among men in women in the teaching profession and not in other occupations (Fraser, 216). Her fight for equal pay was pretty successful and she was a true legacy of the progressive era (Fraser, 216). The equal pay for women and men was a slow process that is still not perfect, but it is a lot better than it used to be. This is largely because of the work of Grace C. Strachan and women like her. She fought for equality and slowly did receive it. |
